The Palm Jumeirah is an artificial
island created using land reclamation owned by the Dubai government. The Palm Jumeirah is in the shape of
a palm tree. It consists of a trunk, a crown with 17 fronds, and a surrounding
crescent island that forms an 11 kilometre-long breakwater. The island is 5
kilometres by 5 kilometres and its total area is larger than 800 football
pitches. The crown is connected to the mainland by a 300-metre bridge and the
crescent is connected to the top of the palm by a subsea tunnel. It is like a palm tree floated on the water if we see it from the
space. The color of the palm is green on the afternoon and golden at night
because of the lamps light. The branches filled by many houses and at the end
of the palm there’s a building named the Atlantis.

Renandya (2002:204) said that speaking a language is
especially difficult for foreign language learners because effective oral
communication requires the ability to use the language appropriately in social
interactions. Many Indonesian
citizen who learn English as foreign language feel that it’s so difficult to
speak English fluently. They change to be ‘a different person’ when they are
speaking English. They have to use the structure of English language which is
totally different with Indonesian, the stress of certain words, know any
vocabularies included idioms to understand what the other conversation
participants are talking about, and other differences. The example of English
structure difference is the way we want to give the information about time. In
English, we only need to change the Verb form to inform whether an event
happens now, in the past, or in the future; while in Indonesian we must state
the time to make our information obvious. In the sentence “I wrote a letter”,
we can conclude that the actor/subject states he/she wrote a letter in the past, so the verb is in the past form. In Indonesian, we have to
say “Saya menulis sebuah surat (kemarin, dua hari yang lalu, or whatever the
adverb of past time is)” to inform the action was done in the past. Stress
gives different meaning of a word. For example in the word “content”. If we
stress the first syllable /ˈkɒn.tent/, the
word is a noun which means the list of articles or parts
contained in a magazine or book, with the number of the page they begin on; but if we stress the second syllable /kənˈtent/, the
word is a verb which means to make someone feel happy and
satisfied. In English, there are many idioms that have to be
known. An idiom is a group of words in a fixed order
that have a particular meaning that is different from the meanings of each word
understood on its own. “Call for” doesn’t mean calling someone/something, but it means
to arrive to collect or pick up a person or a thing. (Used especially when you
are to pick someone up and are acting as an escort.), and to need, require, or demand something
or the services of someone. I
will call for you about eight this evening.
The messenger will call for your reply in the morning. The recipe calls
for two cups of flour. This job calls
for someone with good eyesight.

Renandya (1980:210) stated that speaking
is one of the elements of communication. Speakers talk in order to have some
effect on their listeners. They assert things to change their state of
knowledge. They ask them questions to get them to provide information. They
request things to get them to do things for them. And they promise, warn, and
exclaim to affect them in still other ways. The nature of the speech act should
therefore play a control role in the process of speech production. Speakers
begin with the intention of affecting their listeners in a particular way. They
select and utter a sentence they will bring just this affect.
Harmer (2001:99-100) argued that almost entire
libraries have been written on speaking, however space provided here does not
allow to cover all the theories and notes in this work. peaking, together with
writing, belongs among productive skills.Speaking is the most productive skill because it is
used in many occasions of life. Unlike writing, listening, or reading; speaking
becomes the main point of giving information to people. It is used in daily
conversation, seminar, and other occasions. Speaking can be the most productive
skill to earn money because it is used in teaching, begging, negotiating
something, etc. The use of speaking is often collaborated with writing. In
certain kinds of books for example, the author prefer to use the language of
speaking rather than the language of writing (formal).
From those,
we can conclude that speaking skill is paramount. There isn’t any reason to not
gain speaking skill if we consider to the importance of it.
